Newcastle transfer news: 'Incredible' player's wage demands put Magpies off
Eddie Howe’s side are absolutely flying at the moment and moved back up to third place in the Premier League after beating Fulham on Sunday.
Alexander Isak’s late goal proved to be the difference between the sides but Newcastle were handed a blow as Bruno Guimaraes was forced off with an injury at half-time.
The Magpies had already been considering bolstering their midfield options and while The Daily Mail reports Guimaraes’ injury is likely to keep him out for weeks, rather than months, they may need to dip into the market this month.
Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for Tielemans over the past few months as the Belgian’s contract with Leicester is set to run until the end of the season.
But it seems that Howe’s men are facing a massive hurdle in terms of the salary he is demanding to make a switch to St James’ Park.
Newcastle put off by Tielemans’ wage demands
The Athletic reports that Newcastle made enquiries about Tielemans over the summer and have considered making a move this month.
They are also looking at the possibility of bringing the 25-year-old in for free at the end of the season, but his salary demands are causing an issue.
Newcastle are now looking at signing alternative targets due to their reluctance to meet his wage demands.
The outlet notes that Howe is a huge admirer of Tielemans, while his assistant Graeme Jones worked with him at international level for Belgium.
Tielemans has been ‘incredible’ for the Foxes over the past few seasons and it seems like a foregone conclusion that he will leave the King Power Stadium by the end of the camapign.
He would fit into Howe’s side perfectly well and could provide another creative outlet in the middle of the park alongside Guimaraes.
But the midfielder seems to be pricing himself out of a move for the time being, with The Telegraph also reporting that Arsenal were put off by his wage demands over the summer.
The Leicester star may have more luck convincing sides to match his demands when he is available for free in a few months, but it remains unclear whether Brendan Rodgers will allow him to leave during the current transfer window.
The Foxes remain firmly in a relegation battle at the moment and sit just two points above the dreaded zone.
