Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe interested in striker once tipped to become better than Harry Kane

Newcastle United now reportedly want to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin – who was previously tipped to become better than Harry Kane

Eddie Howe will be eager to add some fresh faces to his squad before the window closes as he aims to propel Newcastle into the Champions League.

The Magpies brought in Alexander Isak for a club-record fee over the summer, but St James’ Park was touted as a possible destination for Calvert-Lewin beforehand.

Journalist Dean Jones claimed that Newcastle were looking at signing the Everton star before landing Isak from Real Sociedad.

Now, it seems Howe could be about to rekindle his interest in the Englishman, with Chris Wood’s future in the north East in doubt.

Newcastle interested in Calvert-Lewin

The Sun reports that Newcastle are interested in Calvert-Lewin and are eyeing a £35 million move for the player.

The outlet claims that the Toffees are even preparing for a bid to come in for their striker, while Newcastle are willing to wait until the summer if the Merseyside club decide against a sale.

With Wood emerging as a target for newly-promoted Nottingham Forest, there could be space in the squad for Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin hasn’t enjoyed his best season at Goodison Park after being ruled out with a knee injury at the beginning of the campaign.

He’s only managed one goal in nine appearances in the Premier League this season, but he was a ‘fantastic‘ goal scorer for the Toffees before his progress was hampered by persistent injuries.

The Everton man has lost his place in the England squad over the past year. But when he was firing under Carlo Ancelotti back in 2020, former West Ham striker Carlton Cole suggested he could become better than Tottenham star Harry Kane on TalkSPORT

While Calvert-Lewin has shown he can be a reliable goal scorer in the past, he has really struggled with injuries over the past year. He would arguably be an upgrade on Wood, but Newcastle have better options at the club in Callum Wilson and Isak.
