Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester City blow: Romano gives update on Modric

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, reporting that he expects the midfielder to stay – which comes as a blow to Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle.

Modric, 36, is out of contract at the end of the season. Having spent nine years at Madrid, clocking up an enormous 408 appearances for the Galacticos, many had expected the Croatian to leave in the summer.

Spanish outlet Super Deporte report that three Premier League clubs have shown interest. Manchester City want him, as do Tottenham and Newcastle. It is believed Modric might consider a City move.

It would allow him to easily transition to MLS side New York City, something which he wants to do. The lure of returning to Tottenham, or to Newcastle, is not said to be tempting for Modric.

Now, Romano has extinguished any remaining hopes from fans of the three Premier League clubs – by reporting that Real Madrid are working to extend his contract until 2023. There is a willingness from both parties.

Newcastle must not have had much hope of convincing Modric to join the club either in January, or next summer. Modric is a player that still boasts enormous Champions League quality, and contribution.

A return to Tottenham might have pulled on the heartstrings of Modric – combining that with the new stadium, and to live in London. That might be tempting, as is Manchester City – who are Premier League champions.

But Modric is at home in Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s side sit eight points clear at the top of La Liga as we approach the midway stage of the season, and he would be foolish to leave next summer.
