Newcastle told their £10m player would not be getting games at most other Premier League teams

Newcastle United are one of the best teams in England, but right now, they’re struggling.

The Magpies’ squad has been utterly decimated by injuries lately, and, in turn, their form has gone out of the window.

Newcastle have had to call on a number of fringe players as of late, and, if we’re being brutally honest, some aren’t up to scratch.

Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Gregor Robertson has been discussing some of Newcastle’s depth options, and he says that Matt Ritchie wouldn’t get a game for most teams in the Premier League despite the fact he’s now getting minutes for Newcastle.

Ritchie wouldn’t get a game elsewhere

Robertson shared his verdict on the £10m man.

“They are down to their barebones, look who they’re bringing on, Matt Ritchie, he probably wouldn’t get near many other Premier League teams, and they’re down to the barebones. Callum Wilson said afterwards that it felt like a game too far, and there’s nothing wrong with admitting that,” Robertson said.

Desperate times

The fact that Matt Ritchie is getting a game for Newcastle just goes to show how desperate their situation is right now.

Ritchie was barely getting a game during the Steve Bruce era, but now, he’s back in the fold at St James’ Park due to this injury crisis.

As Robertson says, Ritchie isn’t a Premier League-level player these days, and it’s rather strange to see him playing for Newcastle semi-regularly at the moment.

Newcastle will want to transition into being one of Europe’s elite clubs over the next few years, and in order to do that, they need to upgrade their depth options and consign players like Ritchie to the history books.

Newcastle’s current depth problems are a huge issue to say the least, and it may take some time for this situation to improve.
