Report: Newcastle refusing to give up signing 28-year-old who won an Olympic gold medal last summer

Newcastle United are refusing to give up on signing Brazilian defender, Diego Carlos, despite Sevilla rejecting an opening bid from the Magpies already.

PIF are looking to back Eddie Howe in the January transfer window and Newcastle are already set to announce the signing of England defender, Kieran Trippier, tomorrow morning. And if things continue as planned, Diego Carlos could be next on the agenda.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have seen an opening bid for Carlos rejected by Sevilla. However, the Magpies are not willing to give up just yet. It is claimed that talks are continuing, with Eddie Howe apparently desperate for at least one centre-back in January.

Carlos has long been linked with a move to the Premier League. He was watched by Liverpool in 2020, but ended up staying in Spain.

Why Do Footballers Demand Higher Wages?

Newcastle are looking to spend their way out of trouble this month. The signing of Trippier is expected to be the first of many. Carlos, who has six caps for Brazil and won an Olympic gold medal in the summer, could well be the next one over the line.

TBR’s View: Diego Carlos Another Statement Signing For Newcastle

Talk about making a splash. The signing of Trippier is one thing. But if Newcastle get a deal for Carlos over the line then the ante is upped once again.

The South American has been one of the standout performers in the Spanish league in recent times. At 28, he’s the perfect age as well to really get into the groove at St James’ Park. After all, he should be hitting his prime years.

Signings like Trippier and Carlos could well convince others to join Newcastle. And while yes, the money is a big reason, it also shows a belief in the project. If PIF pull this one off, then Newcastle fans will be wondering who is going to be next.
