Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that Newcastle United are set to try and make a move for young Flamengo prospect Matheus Franca in the next few days, with the journalist claiming that he is one player to keep an eye on.
The Magpies are flying this season. Eddie Howe’s side remain amongst the pace-setters in the Premier League. Saturday’s goalless draw with Leeds highlighted how far they have come, with the Whites holding out for a point with a style Newcastle fans felt evoked memories of when Steve Bruce was in charge of their ranks.

They have got very little wrong in the market since the new owners came in. So there will be a sense of excitement regarding what Newcastle may do in the coming windows.
Newcastle to make move for Matheus Franca
But it is not just big names who have come through the door. Newcastle have worked on bolstering their youth ranks, with Australia starlet Garang Kuol one of the latest to sign up.

It seems that their next addition could be another teenager. Romano has suggested that Newcastle are working on a move for Franca. And there could be news in the near future.
“It’s sure to be a busy January, and one potential transfer I’d keep an eye on is one of my favourite talents: Matheus Franca,” he told Caught Offside. “He’s doing great at Flamengo and Newcastle are interested in signing him, but there’s still no full agreement.
“Newcastle will push again in the next days, while Bayer Leverkusen have also been tracking him for a long time.”
Franca is extremely versatile. The 18-year-old – who was born just a couple of days before Craig Bellamy, Kieron Dyer and Alan Shearer helped Newcastle to a 4-2 win over Everton – played as both a striker and attacking midfielder last season.
He also has the ability to play on either wing. So Newcastle obviously feel that he has real potential and could have a future in a number of roles.
He is already playing top-flight football in Brazil. So he could be another inspired signing – if Newcastle are now able to agree terms with Flamengo.
