Newcastle thought they had Chelsea-bound Andrey Santos - journalist

Journalist Graeme Bailey has told the Talking Transfers podcast that Newcastle United thought that they were going to sign Andrey Santos as the midfielder nears his big-money move to Chelsea.

It appears that Santos is going to become the latest youngster to make the switch to Stamford Bridge. Of course, the Blues signed the likes of Omari Hutchinson, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei in the summer.

Santos has been superb for Vasco da Gama this season. And in total, he has eight goals in 37 games for the second division side’s first-team.

Newcastle thought they would sign Andrey Santos

Bailey has explained that Chelsea are closing in on a deal which could ultimately cost them £20 million. And with that, Newcastle have been dealt a major blow ahead of the January transfer window.

The journalist explained that the Magpies felt that he was going to be headed to St James’ Park at one stage.

“Andrey Santos is going to be a £20 million deal in total we understand, about £12 million down. This will be a huge frustration to Newcastle. They thought they had this boy. He’s one of the best young players in Brazil in that midfield position,” he told the Talking Transfers podcast.

“They saw him as like a baby Bruno. They thought Bruno Guimaraes would be an ideal person to bring him on.”

Chelsea have been incredibly smart in the market since their new owners have come in. They have targeted some of the best young players in the game. And they have wasted little time in bringing them in.

That was always likely to help in their pursuit of Santos. Graham Potter’s men can show the 18-year-old that they are looking to build something incredibly exciting for the future.

Newcastle also have that opportunity. They have been superb under Eddie Howe. And actually, they have got very little wrong in the market since their own takeover.

But they are not at that elite level just yet. So they are going to miss out on some exceptional players as they look to make that next jump.
