Oisin McEntee has confirmed on Twitter that he has put pen to paper on a new Newcastle United contract, underlining his delight that he will continue on Tyneside.
McEntee, 19, has been a regular in Newcastle’s Under-23 side this season – clocking up 13 Premier League 2 appearances and even featuring twice in Newcastle’s three EFL Trophy matches.
A 6ft 3in centre-back, McEntee was born in New York but moved to Ireland as a child and has even clocked up one Ireland Under-19 cap. He has been training with Steve Bruce’s first team this season.
It was unclear when the defender’s previous deal expired after initially joining Newcastle in 2017, but he has now confirmed with a post on Twitter that he has agreed new terms with Steve Bruce’s side.
TBR’s view – McEntee needs loan, competition fierce
Even though Newcastle play with three centre-backs, McEntee has a long list of central defenders to work his way past – and that is if takeover fails to go through. Jamaal Lascelles remains first choice, as captain.
Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune are all first-team options, leaving McEntee with little chance of making his debut. A loan is needed.
