Newcastle targeting is surely bad news for Ciaran Clark

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing defender Yoann Barbet from Championship club Brentford.

According to Calciomercato, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is keen on bringing the 25-year-old to St James’ Park and Aston Villa are also mentioned as potential suitors.

The Frenchman is currently out of contract with Brentford at the end of the season and he could be a decent addition on a free transfer.

Barbet is a left-footed defender that has been moulded into a centre-back as part of a back three this season for Brentford, which is a system that Newcastle also implement.

He’s been a regular in the Championship this campaign and a consistent performer defensively.

Newcastle’s interest in the Brentford ace should be a concern for Ciaran Clark, who should be fearful of his future.

Clark is currently on the books at Newcastle and was signed for £5million (Sky Sports) back in 2016.

He is a left-footed centre-back that would surely have to make way in the squad for Barbet if he was to move to the North East.

Clark has made just 14 senior appearances in all competitions this campaign and an exit in search of more regular football could make sense for all parties.

The Irishman is usually a dependable figure when he plays, but there is real stiff competition for places in the backline and Benitez could be looking to crank that up again.
