Newcastle target Wilfried Kanon should not be a priority this summer

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a move for defender Wilfried Kanon from Dutch side Den Haag.

The Sun reports that Newcastle are set to battle Leicester City and Southampton for the 25-year-old this summer.

The report details that Eredivisie club Den Haag are resigned to losing their enforcer and it could take around £3million to prize him away.

Kanon is a no-nonsense centre-back that has been a consistent performer in the Dutch top-flight in recent years and is available at a bargain price.

But it makes very little sense for Rafael Benitez’s team to be targeting a centre-back when the squad needs improving elsewhere.

Newcastle’s defensive backbone played a major part in the team this season retaining their Premier League status for a second year on the bounce.

They are particularly stacked with quality centre-back options, with the likes of Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Paul Dummett and Federico Fernandez all capable in the back three.

The Magpies certainly don’t need new centre-back additions, despite the possibility of a £3million bargain with Ivory Coast international Kanon.

If the North East club want to compete regularly in the top half of the table, they certainly need more attacking options going into next season and that should be a summer priority.
