Newcastle target Ritsu Doan on top 10 shortlist for U-21 Ballon d’Or

Newcastle United fans should go wild if they manage to sign reported attacking target Ritsu Doan from Dutch top-flight club FC Groningen.

According to the Chronicle, Magpies scouts have been casting their eye over the 20-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.

It is understood that Manchester City have also been tracking the left-footed winger, but Newcastle have a far better chance of giving him first-team football.

The report adds that Doan has a price tag of £1.7million and Rafael Benitez will now meet with managing director Lee Charnley to discuss the next step.

Newcastle should take little time in making their next move, as swooping for the Eredivisie star is a no-brainer and he is potentially available at a bargain price.

Doan is the standout player for Groningen as it stands and now has a good understanding of first-team football.

He is a fleet-footed attacker that can operate from either flank and has a low centre of gravity that makes his dribbling a joy to watch.

The Japan international has the potential to be a future star and made it to the top 10 shortlist of the 2018 Under-21 Ballon d’Or prize, which was won by Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

Doan has the technical ability to bamboozle defenders and this season has scored four goals and managed two assists so far.

Newcastle wouldn’t have to break the bank for his signature and would be bringing in a potential mega star to St James’ Park.
