'Here we go expected soon': Romano shares transfer update that could be bad for Newcastle

Newcastle United have been linked with Velez Sarsfield midfielder Maximo Perrone in recent weeks.

In November, Velez Y Su Mundo reporter Agustin Sileo claimed that the Magpies were plotting a move for the 19-year-old.

Then, Cesar Luis Merlo reported that Newcastle were willing to pay as much as £12.3million for Perrone – more than his release clause.

However, it now looks as though the Magpies may be about to lost out on the talented Argentine.

As well as Newcastle, Manchester City have also been in pursuit of Perrone.

And now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Citizens are set to trigger the player’s release clause – a mere £6.6million.

Here’s what the transfer insider wrote on Twitter:

If this is true, it’ll be a huge blow for Newcastle.

The Magpies seemingly put in a fair bit of work to try and sign Perrone.

There were reports suggesting they were in talks with Velez and with the player’s representatives.

However, City are one of those clubs that can swoop in and, seemingly out of nowhere, close a deal.

Liverpool are similar – look at how they landed Cody Gakpo earlier this week, and Luis Diaz last year.

Now Newcastle are competing over the same type of youngsters (and soon enough, first-team ready stars), they need to learn fast how to swoop in and quickly close deals in the same manner.

Perrone was reportedly on Benfica’s radar as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez. That shows how highly rated he is.

But that also means competition will have been fierce. And if City want him, that’s testament to his amazing talent.
