Newcastle target Maddison wants to join Arsenal or Tottenham - journalist
Journalist Dean Jones has told The Football Terrace that he has heard that James Maddison either wants to join Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur rather than Newcastle United this summer.
Leicester City are certainly facing a fight to keep Maddison at the King Power Stadium this summer. The Magpies have stepped up their interest in the 25-year-old in the last few days.
Reports recently claimed that Newcastle had made a £40 million bid for the England international. Leicester have rejected the offer as they hold out for £60 million. But Eddie Howe’s men are weighing up making a fresh approach.
Reports at the weekend stated that Maddison is open to moving to St James’ Park. But Jones appears to have heard something different.
The journalist hinted that Maddison may be undecided about the prospect of joining Newcastle. Instead, he is very sold on the idea of moving to Spurs or the Gunners.
“We’re in the situation now where James Maddison has had an approach from Newcastle. The offer that Newcastle have put to Leicester isn’t enough. And they’ve got to decide whether they go back with a second bid,” he told The Football Terrace.
“They have not been encouraged to go and bid again for James Maddison. And I don’t get any signs so far that James Maddison actually wants to join Newcastle. From what I hear, James Maddison wants to join Tottenham or Arsenal.”
Maddison wants to join Arsenal or Tottenham
You can understand why Maddison may want to move to North London. He was ‘outstanding‘ last season, and appears to have taken his game to the next level.
With that, he may be impatient about waiting to play in one of Europe’s premier competitions. Obviously, Spurs can offer Champions League football, while Arsenal will be in the Europa League this coming year.
And both clubs appear to be on the lookout for one or two further signings in and around the final third.
So you would imagine that Maddison will be one name mentioned behind the scenes at both Arsenal and Tottenham in the weeks ahead.
It will be interesting to see if either plans to rival Newcastle.
