Newcastle United are reportedly in a battle to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Lewis Travis.

According to the Sun, the Magpies are keen on the 21-year-old after he caught the eye against them in the FA Cup.

It is understood that there are five Premier League clubs regularly checking the upcoming talent in the Championship.

Rafael Benitez is believed to have been impressed by the Englishman after his mature displays in the FA Cup, as Newcastle eventually beat Blackburn in a third round replay after extra-time.

Travis has made a senior breakthrough at Ewood Park in recent times and he could be a smart addition that Newcastle should push hard to try sign.

Travis has been transformed into a central midfielder after being a right-back earlier in his career at Liverpool’s academy.

He is a tidy footballer in possession and looked comfortable competing against Newcastle.

The midfielder is showing a great work-rate and gritty side to his game since breaking into the starting XI in the league, with some mature defensive displays in front of the back four.

Newcastle will hope they have unearthed a gem in Travis before his reputation shoots up and that’s why winning the battle for him is key.

It’s also important that Benitez is allowed to bring in players he wants and supporters will back the manager to the hills if he believes Travis could become something special.
