Newcastle United target Josh Maja could be a brilliant addition for manager Rafael Benitez if they can bring him to St James’ Park.

According to the Daily Mail on 4 January, Newcastle were one of three Premier League clubs monitoring the Sunderland striker ahead of a potential swoop this month.

Crystal Palace and Huddersfield were also mentioned as teams eyeing the Englishman, who has scored 16 goals in 30 games across all competitions this season.

The Sun now reports that Cardiff City are readying a £2million move for Maja, but Sunderland want to recoup £4million for his sale.

It is understood that the 20-year-old’s preference is to sign for a new club this month and be loaned back to the League One club for the rest of the season.

Maja is a potential £4million bargain in the making and a switch across the North East could be brilliant for Newcastle.

Rafael Benitez is working on limited funds and he could find a potential saviour for a minimal fee.

Maja has proven he can be a prolific goalscorer in League One and definitely looks good enough to make the step up.

A direct jump to the Premier League would be a slight risk, but Newcastle desperately need some extra attacking ammunition behind first-choice striker Salomon Rondon.
