Newcastle target James McCarthy a potential game if he rediscovers his form

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Everton midfielder James McCarthy this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is ready to move for the 28-year-old if he remains as manager at St James’ Park.

The report details that the North East club could lose Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden, which is why the Everton ace would help replace them in midfield.

It is understood that Toffees manager Marco Silva doesn’t have him in his long-term plans at Goodison Park.

McCarthy has missed the best part of two years on the sidelines due to a serious injury, with just seven first-team appearances across the last two seasons.

But he’s been back in training since January and Silva often overlooked him for senior contention.

The Irishman is certainly going to need regular minutes to get back to his best, but he’s certainly worth the risk for Newcastle.

McCarthy has 223 Premier League appearances under his belt and has shown over the years he’s a consistent performer in the top-flight.

He’s a no-nonsense enforcer that is most effective as a defensive midfielder, where he breaks up play with tackles and interceptions.

The midfielder would certainly be a decent option for Benitez in the centre of the park and would fit the system well if he recaptures his form.

McCarthy, who earns £50,000-a-week (Spotrac), will see his current contract with Everton expire at the end of next season.
