Newcastle surely have nothing to lose calling up Sorensen vs Southampton

Newcastle United surely have nothing to lose by calling up youngster Elias Sorensen for their weekend clash with Southampton.

The 19-year-old is in red hot form, having hit another hat-trick for the U23s this week against Aston Villa – his second of the season.

The Danish striker, who has been developing in the Magpies’ youth academy for two years since signing from HB Køge, now has 11 goals this season and some fans have been clamouring to see him given a chance in the first-team, which is struggling badly.

Frustratingly for those Sorensen campaigners, U23 coach Ben Dawson has claimed he isn’t quite ready to make the step up.

‘We just need to keep the reins on’

Dawson told the club’s official website: “I don’t think he’s quite ready yet.

“He’s shown signs that, in the future, he could potentially get there, but we just need to keep the reins on, keep him grounded, and make sure he’s working hard every day.

“He’ll be fine – he’s a really lovely kid, and he doesn’t get too carried away with it all.”

It’ll make for disappointing news for many, with Newcastle’s first-team really struggling to score goals this term.

In their nine games so far, Rafa Benitez’s side have managed just six goals.

Against Brighton they managed 27 shots but still couldn’t find the back of the net, which is very concerning.

Is Sorensen not worth a gamble?

At this point, Newcastle are in a desperate situation.

With Sorensen banging the goals in for the U23s, surely he is worth putting on the bench against Southampton.

At least then the option is there.

To keep snubbing someone in such a rich vein of form seems puzzling.

Even more so when the likes or Ayoze Perez and Joselu continue to struggle to produce the goods.
