Newcastle United failed to hold on to a narrow lead against Steve Bruce’s old side Aston Villa on Wednesday evening as the Midlands side scored a late equaliser – and Newcastle supporters are frustrated with Miguel Almiron.
Almiron, 26, has started 30 of Newcastle’s 31 Premier League games with his lung-busting stamina and speed on the ball necessities in Newcastle’s counter-attacking style under Bruce.
But the Paraguay international’s return in front of goal has been below par. Whether he is playing as a winger or behind the striker, Almiron has only managed two goals and two assists in those 30 Premier League games.

Yes, he has netted four times in five FA Cup games – but he has failed to mirror such form in the Premier League. Wednesday night’s showing against Villa was another example, as he missed a glorious chance in the second half.
Played in by Danny Rose, who was excellent at left-back, Almiron took a touch instead of shooting first time from six yards out. He slipped, with his scuffed effort hitting Tyrone Mings and going out for a corner.
It was a below-par display from Almiron, with Newcastle scoring through substitute Dwight Gayle – only for Ahmed Elmohamady to equalise. Newcastle supporters reacted in frustrated mood at Almiron’s display on Twitter.
