Report: Newcastle hoping they can hijack European club's move to sign 'great' £42m player this summer
Newcastle United remain confident they can pull off a deal to bring in Sven Botman this summer, despite talk of the Dutchman moving to AC Milan.
Botman was one of Newcastle’s main targets in January. However, as we all know, a deal was never struck and the Toon settled for the likes of Dan Burn and Matt Targett to help them out in defence. But despite those signings, Newcastle’s interest in Botman hasn’t gone away.
And according to The Athletic, there is a hope within those inside St James’ Park that a deal can be done to bring Botman in ahead of Milan. Manchester United and Tottenham are also reported to have expressed an interest in signing the impressive Lille star.
Newcastle were quoted £42m for Botman in January, along with Milan. However, six months down the line, that price might have altered, with Lille potentially prepared to accept a touch less. Botman is highly-regarded in Europe and Milan legend and current technical director, Paulo Maldini, has even labelled the Dutchman as being a ‘great player‘.
Eddie Howe’s side, meanwhile, are expected to bring in a number of new players this summer.
TBR’s View: Botman To Newcastle Would Be A Statement From PIF
Talk about making a top signing. If Newcastle manage to sign Sven Botman, it would send a huge message of ‘we aren’t messing about’ to the rest of Europe. Especially if the gazump AC Milan.
Botman is a quality operator and improves Newcastle instantly. Much like Bruno Guimaraes is, you’d have to say he’s the sort of signing who can push the Toon onto the next level.
It’s a big summer, this, for PIF and Newcastle. Who they sign and for how much is going to come under scrutiny from everyone. If they get Botman, then nobody will be able to say anything other than ‘well done’.
