Newcastle United piled the misery on Nottingham Forest by emerging 2-0 winners at St James’ Park, and Alan Shearer was blown away by the performance of one player.

Eddie Howe’s side clinched all three points after goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Nick Woltemade on Sunday, moving them up to 11th place in the Premier League.

It has been a mixed start to the campaign for Newcastle, who have won just two of their opening seven league games despite their ambition to push for the Champions League again.

There were, however, plenty of promising signs for Howe ahead of the international break, and Alan Shearer tipped his cap to one man who simply ran the show.

Alan Shearer praises Bruno Guimaraes’ performance

Bruno Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes against Forest and delivered a talismanic performance from midfield, setting a shining example for the rest of his team-mates.

He also broke the deadlock with a stunning bending effort from just outside the penalty area shortly before the hour mark.

Guimaraes was later brought down inside the box by Elliot Anderson and Nick Woltemade clinically scored the resulting penalty, wrapping up the victory for the hosts.

Shearer was blown away by Guimaraes’ contribution, writing in his Premier League Team of the Week: “A true captain’s performance.

“Opened the scoring against Nottingham Forest and then won the penalty that sealed the win.”

Guimaraes took to Instagram to celebrate the result and club legend Shearer doubled down on his praise, leaving a comment which read: “Well done, skipper.”

Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle want to win more trophies

Guimaraes has been ever-present since joining the Magpies from Lyon in January 2022.

He became the first Newcastle captain to win a domestic trophy in 70 years after leading the side to Carabao Cup glory against Liverpool in March.

But the 27-year-old is still not satisfied, and he has made it clear he is determined to win more silverware on Tyneside.

He said: “We have changed everything. Two times Champions League in the last three seasons and winning a trophy, we have been consistent.

“But for us it’s not enough, we want more. We want to keep writing history. But it’s been an unbelievable journey so far.”
