Miguel Almiron has delivered an update to Newcastle United fans on Instagram after the Toon’s club-record signing was ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.
The 25-year-old joined the club from MLS side Atlanta United in the January transfer window, for a fee believed to be in the region of £21million. He has since managed 10 league appearances.
However, Almiron has found adjusting to the Premier League somewhat tough. He is yet to score his first goal for Rafa Benitez’s side, and has failed to provide an assist.
The Paraguay international left the pitch in tears after picking up the injury during the win over Southampton. He could return in time for Paraguay’s Copa America campaign, and posted an update on Instagram.
His caption is translated as: “One more day, we continue.”
Newcastle will want Almiron to miss the Copa America in order for the playmaker to fully recover from the injury and allow him to undergo a full pre-season.
If Almiron declares himself fit for the competition, it will mean that he may risk further injury without fully recovering from the muscle problem. It will also see him miss some of this summer’s pre-season.
That may have a lasting effect, given that he may be unable to hit the ground running next season. We saw it in many of last summer’s World Cup stars. Time will tell.
