Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez has told Argentine outlet Ole that he believes Liverpool probably deserve to win the Premier League title – and hopes the 2019-20 campaign can be completed.
Plenty of talk has been had over the current campaign and whether to finish it when safe, or to completely void the campaign and go again next season. It is also being considered to end the campaign as it is, which would make Liverpool champions.
In terms of the Premier League, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion are also keeping a close eye on proceedings with the duo sitting in the automatic promotion slots with nine league games to play.
Fernandez – who has been a regular with 13th-placed Newcastle, sitting eight points above the drop zone – was asked about Liverpool and how the season should finish. He suggested Liverpool deserve it, before stating he hopes the campaign finishes.

“They are two or three dates fixtures from achieving it, but hey, this has no precedent,” Fernandez said. “They will have to evaluate everything, such as the champion, the relegations, those who can enter a European cup. There’s a lot to talk about.
“There are nine games left, you can play them in six weeks, in June or August you could play and then stretch the other season. I think it will be finished, we depend on everyone’s health. Then we talk about football.”
The current view of the authorities is that the season needs to be completed, especially since Euro 2020 has been postponed for 12 months. The general consensus among supporters is that clubs will only return to training in the summer.
Playing matches behind closed doors in a tournament-like environment might be the best way to get the games played quickly and still keep some sort of a break between the end of this season, and the next campaign.
