Everton completed the signing of 17-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite on Monday afternoon, winning a hotly-contested race that saw many Premier League clubs linked – and Newcastle striker Elias Sorensen has reacted on Twitter.
The Daily Mail claim Everton have spent £1million to sign 6ft 4in colossus Branthwaite, after the English youngster broke into Carlisle’s starting eleven this season and played a bit-part amount of matches before moving to Everton.
Indeed, the defender has clocked up 14 appearances for Carlisle, and although he had a contract with the League Two side – they have decided to cash in on the defender. He is expected to link up with the Under-23 side at Everton.
Branthwaite is currently on loan at Carlisle from Newcastle and has also been in and out of the side at Brunton Park. The Toon striker, who played alongside Branthwaite at Carlisle while on loan, sent a message on Twitter to the new Everton signing.

Everton do need cover in the first team at centre-back, with The Toffees failing to replace Phil Jagielka and Kurt Zouma who both departed in the summer. Mason Holgate has come back into the side and has been converted into a central defender.
However, Branthwaite is not expected to be seen in the senior side for quite some time. David Unsworth is expected to take the reigns and develop Branthwaite, with a view to pushing him into the senior side. The Under-23’s next game is Friday’s Premier League Cup clash against Fulham.
