Aston Villa confirmed the loan signing of veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina from AC Milan until the end of the season on Monday evening, following Tom Heaton’s season-ending knee injury – and Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has responded on Instagram.
Reina, 37, has returned to the Premier League for the first time after leaving Liverpool to join Bayern Munich in the summer of 2014. He has since turned out for Napoli, and then AC Milan. Now, he will a seventh club to his professional career.
With Heaton sidelined until the summer, 38-time Spain international Reina will be tasked with organising a Villa defence that conceded six goals against Manchester City on Sunday. Villa are sitting in the relegation zone.
Reina posted on Instagram after completing a move to the Midlands club on loan, after managing just one outing this season for Milan as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s back-up. He becomes Villa’s second January signing, after Danny Drinkwater.
A winner of the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain as well as boasting 789 professional matches at club level – 395 of which came at Liverpool – Reina brings with him an enormous amount of experience.
Reina played alongside Newcastle target man Carroll during his time at Liverpool and the former West Ham striker replied to Reina’s post, stating his delight at seeing Reina back in English football.
