Newcastle signing reported target Antonio Barreca would soften blow of missing out on Jordan Lukaku

Newcastle United have been left frustrated in pursuit of a key defensive target.

Jordan Lukaku was supposed to be joining Newcastle on loan from Lazio but this deal has fallen through at the final hurdle.

The Belgian left-back had undergone a medical at Newcastle but the Magpies released a statement (via Sky Sports News) confirming that the deal was off.

It still leaves Rafa Benitez without a fit senior left-back with Paul Dummett sidelined.

But according to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are ready to reignite their interest in Monaco outcast Antonio Barreca.

If Barreca finds this best form at Newcastle, he could be a sensible solution in a problem area and it would soften the blow of missing out on Lukaku.

The 23-year-old is out of favour at Monaco after making a summer move from Torino.

With just eight appearances to his name this season, Barreca’s career is stalling after an impressive stint in Italy.

The ex-Italy under-21 international, who is renowned for his speed, had played 39 times for Serie A side Torino before his switch to France.

Newcastle desperately need a new left-back and Barreca could be a shrewd addition before the transfer window slams shut this week.
