Newcastle should recall defender Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar has had a difficult start to life at St James’ Park, but it’s far too early for people to be writing him off at Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old defender has made just two first-team appearances this season since he joined in the summer and could offer some help if he got a run in the side.

He looked solid for the majority of the Premier League game against Chelsea before giving away a penalty, while centre-forward Daryl Murphy gave him a tough ride in the Carabao Cup.

But he’s adjusting to the pace of English football and has shown during his 43 international caps for Switzerland that he is a top player.

The Magpies signed the centre-back for just £3million (Daily Mail) in the summer and he could turn out to be a bargain in the future.

Newcastle are missing long-term injury absentee Florian Lejeune and need to find a new centre-back partner alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles, as Ciaran Clark isn’t cutting the grade.

Manager Rafael Benitez’s side needs to open his eyes to fringe man Schar, who deserves a reprieve after a difficult start at the North East club.

He is a ball-playing defender that has a great passing range and a few fresh faces in the side could be the perfect solution to help Newcastle pick up their first win of the season.
