Newcastle should move for Arsenal star Nacho Monreal in January
Newcastle United should consider a move for Nacho Monreal in January.
Rafa Benitez is believed to want a left-back in the next transfer window, with Paul Dummett the only recognised player in that position at present.
Whenever the Welshman has been absent through injury this season, Benitez has shoehorned Ciaran Clark or Kenedy to cover.

The Magpies do have Achraf Lazaar but the Moroccan hasn’t played for the first-team in over a year, and clearly Benitez doesn’t trust him.
The need for cover is clear, and Benitez should look no further than fellow countryman Monreal.
Why Monreal?
The Arsenal defender could be available on the cheap, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
Unai Emery has given no indication that the former Malaga full-back will put pen to paper on a new contract, or that one will even be offered.
Newcastle should test the waters over Monreal and rival Marseille, whom France Football say are also interested in the player.

Last term, Monreal was one of Arsenal’s best players and over the years he’s proven to be a capable defender.
He has shown himself in his six years at the club to be an attack-minded player, which is what Benitez wants.
He may be set to turn 33 in February, but Monreal could be a viable short-term and, most importantly, cheap option.
