Newcastle should grant Diame new two-year deal with current contract dwindling

Mo Diame wants a new two-year contract at Newcastle United, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, according to the Chronicle.

They report that Diame is close to triggering a one-year extension to his Magpies stay with the amount of appearances he has racked up this term.

But the former West ham midfielder reportedly wants to stay until 2021 – two extra years. And it remains to be seen if the club will grant his demands; there is something of a stand-off at present, with no movement forthcoming.

Diame may not be the most inspiring player and a stay until 2021 would take him to the age of 33 but he has good Premier League experience, physicality and versatility.

And Newcastle’s lack of depth and sustained underinvestment means that they cannot afford to let players like Diame go, especially for nothing if his contract runs out at the end of this season.

It makes sense to keep Diame onside and his desire to stay in the north east should go down well with the fanbase.

They would love for their club to be in a position to revamp their midfield with big-money arrivals but while that’s not an option, players like Diame remain important.

On top of that, giving him a two-year deal protect some degree of transfer value for a player who could still attract interest from elsewhere.
