Newcastle should consider Haris Seferovic, who Steve Bruce wanted previously

Newcastle United have made two signings so far in January, but Steve Bruce could be set to add one or two more before Friday’s deadline.

Last week saw the arrivals of Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro on loan deals, and the manager has admitted the club are ‘still trying’ to get new faces in and that there are ‘a couple of plates spinning’ (Express).

The majority of Newcastle supporters are hoping to see the arrival of a new striker, with the scoring of goals once again proving a rather difficult task this season.

Record signing Joelinton has failed to hit the ground running, and neither Dwight Gayle nor Andy Carroll have scored in 2019/20 so far.

Newcastle need some firepower, so perhaps they could look to someone who has previously interested Bruce.

Haris Seferovic of Benfica was supposedly a target for the 59-year-old during his time in charge at Aston Villa (Daily Mail), and maybe he ought to consider a late January swoop for the Swiss striker, who has six goals so far this term.

According to O Jogo, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are both keen, so it may be a challenge.

TBR’s view – Seferovic can challenge Joelinton

Joelinton has undoubtedly underwhelmed at Newcastle so far, but perhaps he has suffered from a lack of good competition from the backup strikers.

Newcastle signing Seferovic would be good for depth and could be what’s needed to light a fire beneath the Brazilian.

For Benfica he has a decent record of 40 goals and 15 assists in 107 appearances – that suggests he’s by no means prolific, but that he does have a creative side.

Like the other Newcastle forwards, 6ft 1in Seferovic is a handful but has a lot more experience than Joelinton.
