Report: 'Fearless' 21-year-old set to be Newcastle's first January signing as Howe gets to work quickly

Newcastle United could be in for a busy old January as they look to press on with their push for the top four and Harrison Ashby could be first through the door.

The Magpies apparently have a nice list of potential targets ahead of January and the summer. Eddie Howe has played down talk of a huge splurge in January, but has admitted he’ll be looking at doing what he can.

And according to The Guardian, West Ham’s Ashby is seen as the most realistic and likely signing for the Mags.

Ashby is seen by Howe as being ideal to cover for the in-form Kieran Trippier at full-back. The England star has been a revelation since signing but Howe is more than aware of how big a loss he’d be if he was out.

Ashby, 21, has been identified as a potential replacement for some time now. And the Guardian believes he is the most realistic signing Newcastle will make early in the window.

Leeds United are also thought to be keen on signing Ashby. However, it’s expected that Newcastle will be the side who snap up the young Hammer. Despite being highly rated by the Hammers, Ashby has only featured sporadically in the Conference League and could be open to a move to the northeast to boost his career.

TBR’s View: Newcastle continuing smart recruitment

While Harrison Ashby might not be the most glamorous of signings for Newcastle, it is yet another step in the right direction in terms of their strategy.

Ashby is another exciting young player who Eddie Howe can get to work with. We’ve already seen how the Newcastle manager improves players and Ashby should be excited to work with the Toon boss.

Lauded by Hammers fans as a ‘fearless’ defender, it seems the London club would be losing a good asset to the Mags if this deal does indeed get done.
