Newcastle United will reportedly meet this for a specific transfer meeting, with Eddie Howe keen to see a midfielder brought in.

The Magpies have been limited in what they can spend this month due to FFP restrictions, with Newcastle expected to look into the loan market if a signing is to be made.

With Newcastle suffering from as many injuries as they have done this season, more than one transfer should be made if the Toon are to get their top-four dream back on track.

And according to the Athletic, the signing Howe really wants to get done is a midfielder, with Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips a realistic target for the Magpies.

As per the report, there’s optimism at St. James’ Park that a deal can be reached with the reigning Premier League champions for the England international this month.

Moreover, with Phillips available on loan, there is little fear that Newcastle will be breaking any FFP rules, with the Magpies currently sitting on the edge with the restrictions.

Newcastle need to start getting a move on with transfers

The January transfer market is yet to fully ignite in England, with few clubs willing to really push the boat out this month to add to their squads.

Yet that can all change with Newcastle, and the loan signing of Phillips could be a game-changer for the Toon in the second half of the Premier League season.

As we know, the Magpies are clearly interested in signing the City midfielder, and bringing in the former Leeds United man on loan could be a sensational addition for Newcastle this month.

Moreover, with transfer talks now taking place at Newcastle, we could see some movement in the Tyneside club recruiting Phillips, who he himself might be keen on a move this January.
