Newcastle are reportedly fighting it out to sign Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe, a player Steve Bruce compared to Joelinton back in October 2019.
Pepe, 26, has struggled at Arsenal since his club-record move to The Emirates from Lille. Costing £72million, he has scored 25 goals in 98 games.
But given he netted 23 goals for Lille in the season prior to joining Arsenal, the Ivory Coast international has failed to live up to the hype – or price tag.
Jeunes Footeux claim that Newcastle are battling Everton and Crystal Palace in the race to sign Pepe. It is believed a loan-to-buy deal could be secured.
Newcastle, of course, have a player similar to Pepe – in that he cost a club-record fee but has struggled; Joelinton. Bruce likened both in October 2019.

“We have seen Nicolas Pépé for Arsenal recently get off the mark,” Bruce told the Chronicle. “It takes time. He’s a £72million player.
“But no matter what your price tag is, it takes time to adjust. Especially when you are young like Joe. He’s only at the start of his career.”
Bruce on Pepe: Newcastle could be platform Arsenal star needs
At Arsenal, Pepe has endured a rotation system that has simply not benefited the winger. That, and playing under the scrutiny of Arsenal fans.
An expectant fanbase, the mixture of the pressure from supporters and the hype around his price tag – meant it was always going to be hard for Pepe.
A new stage, a new platform, regular game time and the chance to play without the weight of a transfer fee – Pepe might shine for Newcastle.
But if he turns out to be anything like Joelinton – who is still looking to settle at the Toon two years after Bruce’s comments – then he will flop, again.
