Newcastle United are reportedly keeping tabs on Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts ahead of the summer with a contract on the table for the Wales international – a player that Alan Shearer raved about earlier this season.
Roberts, 22, has been in and out of the Leeds side this season – starting 12 consecutive Premier League games for Leeds in attacking midfield, before being dropped on Saturday as Leeds cruised past Burnley with a 4-0 win.
He has clocked up 26 appearances in all competitions, but has failed to score and only provided two assists. His contract at Elland Road is due to expire in June 2022 – but the Mail claim Leeds have tabled a long-term deal.
However, Roberts could also have the chance to move north and join Newcastle. The Toon are taking a look at the £10million-rated Leeds man, a player that Shearer labelled a ‘constant thorn’ following a 0-0 draw against Chelsea.
“Gave Leeds United an attacking option from midfield and was a constant thorn in Chelsea’s side,” Shearer said, picking the £4million (Mail) signing in his Team of the Week following the draw against Chelsea in March.

TBR’s view – Would Roberts improve Newcastle?
Roberts has shown glimpses of magic for Leeds. Here and there, the Wales star has been responsible for little moments of gold dust, a sprinkling of genius but to the frustration of Leeds fans – he has failed to prove consistent.
At 22, though, he needs regular game time to show what he is worth. His best performances have come in the run of 12 starts – including Chelsea – and as either a striker or an attacking midfielder, he has plenty of potential.
At £10million? He could be a bargain but right now, that seems an expensive risk – especially when Newcastle have bigger problems, at left-back and up front for example. A decent signing, but not the biggest priority.
