Newcastle reportedly want Gonzalo Higuain and Jermaine Jenas is a big fan

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer as the potential new owners look to bring in a big-name signing – and Jermaine Jenas is a big fan, comparing him to Sergio Aguero.

A takeover is edging towards an announcement with only a matter of small issues barring the end of Mike Ashley’s 13-year tenure. In the meantime, the potential new owners have been sounding out who they want to sign in the coming months.

Higuain, 32, has emerged as another option for Newcastle – with the Argentine having dropped down the pecking order behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala. Higuain has played 34 times this season, but only completed 90 minutes 11 times.

TuttoJuve claim Juventus will sanction a loan deal for Higuain, who has earned 75 Argentina caps. Newcastle are seemingly keen, and ex-Toon midfielder Jermaine Jenas is clearly a fan of the striker when commenting on his arrival at Chelsea in 2019.

“He’s a player that can hold up the ball,” Jenas told Premier League Productions, as per the Daily Star. “He’s actually a lot quicker than people think and more importantly he scores goals. When he was at Napoli he scored 36, 37 goals in that season.

“He’s very good from scoring outside the box and inside the box. In front of goal he is clinical. He can play one up top because he’s got the physical attributes. He’s not very tall but he can hold it in, a bit like [Sergio] Aguero does for Manchester City.”

TBR’s view – Jenas is right, Higuain is a top-quality striker

Higuain would take Newcastle to the next level. Not only would he massively improve the club in the final third, the £130,000-a-week striker (TJ) would also galvanise a fan base that have been saddened by Ashley’s tenure over the last 13 years.

Jenas has summed up Higuain to a tee. Quicker than people think, more than capable of holding the ball up and bringing others into play, Higuain is an elder version of Aguero. That kind of player is crucial if Newcastle are to improve.
