Newcastle reportedly want 31-year-old that Shearer said gives you 8/10 every week

Newcastle are reportedly considering a surprise move to bring Gini Wijnaldum back – a player Alan Shearer once labelled “Mr. Consistent”.

Newcastle are expected to be in the market for a new midfielder in January. Steve Bruce wanted a midfielder and a defender last summer.

But he was unable to bring them in, other than a permanent deal for an on-loan player in Joe Willock. The need for a midfielder remains at Newcastle.

TeamTalk report that Newcastle want to take advantage of Wijnaldum’s tricky start at PSG – since his free transfer from Liverpool to France.

He has started just nine of his 18 appearances, completing an entire match only on three occasions. Newcastle want him back at St. James’ Park.

Speaking about Wijnaldum in 2019, Shearer labelled him “Mr Consistent”. He told BBC that the Dutch midfielder gives you 8/10 every week.

“Wijnaldum is Mr Consistent. I don’t think Liverpool would be where they are without his performances. He offers solidity,” Shearer told BBC.

“He is a leader in that midfield. Not many people mention him compared to the others, but he has been a regular 8/10 each week.”

Shearer on Wijnaldum: Could PSG tempted by Newcastle return?

Wijnaldum might be thinking what if, had he signed on the dotted line at Barcelona instead of PSG. So much so, that he might be looking for a move.

If he is thinking of a move, there are not many clubs that will be able to afford his wages. Newcastle are one of those clubs that could get him.

But while Newcastle can secure his wages, they are unable to offer Champions League football – or even Premier League security.

Newcastle are rock-bottom of the Premier League. If the Toon are to get Wijnaldum, they will be pulling off a miracle of a deal.
