Newcastle reportedly shortlist manager that Mario Gotze has labelled as ‘special’

Newcastle United have reportedly shortlisted Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre and Mario Gotze’s recent comments on the Swiss manager should have Toon fans excited over his potential arrival at St. James’ Park.

ESPN claim former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, ex-Juventus gaffer Max Allegri, Toon icon Rafa Benitez and indedd the impressive Favre have all been shortlist by Newcastle’s reportedly imminent new owners.

A takeover is expected to be announced in the coming days, as Amanda Staveley forefronts a £300million move to end Mike Ashley’s much-criticised 13-year tenure. Steve Bruce’s position as manager is certainly under threat.

Though Favre is somewhat of an unknown to Premier League supporters, the 62-year-old has starred as manager of Dortmund – winning 51 of his 83 matches in charge. World Cup winner Mario Gotze is an enormous fan of his boss.

“Comparing coaches and players is always very difficult because they all have their own philosophies and concepts,” Gotze said on the Bundesliga’s official website in 2019. “What makes Lucien Favre stand out is his attention to detail.

“His tactics and his desire for the team to have one mind both going forward and defending. He wants us to do this as a team, but also to play good football, and that is what makes him special and sets us apart this season.”

TBR’s view – Should Newcastle opt for Favre, over other managers?

They could do a lot worse. Mauricio Pochettino is out of work but his wages would be enormous, given he was earning the best part of £200,000 a week at Tottenham – a figure which he is still being paid by chairman Daniel Levy.

Allegri is a winner, but he has never managed in England – only ever managing in Italy. Benitez is obviously a favourite among supporters, but the Toon icon was very defensive during his reign and a more expansive manager is likely to be eyed.

Favre, who has starred as boss of a Dortmund side that includes Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and more, has got his side playing so freely that even Bayern have struggled. He would be an excellent appointment.
