Newcastle reportedly close to signing Lille defender Edgar Le

Newcastle United are closing in on a swoop for Lille defender Edgar Le, according to Turkish outlet TRT Spor, via Sport Witness.

They report that the Ligue 1 club are finally getting their transfer business sorted after the sale of Nicolas Pepe and Rafael Leao.

That reportedly means they are about to swoop for Yusuf Yazıcı from Trabzonspor, and once they’ve signed him, they’ll let Edgar Le go to Newcastle.

The report says that Steve Bruce’s side are close to landing the Portuguese 25-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Nantes.

Edgar Le can play as a central defender and a right back, with the latter a position in which Newcastle desperately need cover and competition for DeAndre Yedlin.

While Florian Lejeune is out injured, an extra body in the heart of defence may not go amiss either – but it will not be lost on Magpies fans that their club is going back towards the policy of exploiting the French market.

It’s perhaps tough to see Le being strong enough to come in and instantly improve a Premier League defence given that Lille loaned him out last year and are keen to let him go in order to help fund a swoop for a player they really want.
