Newcastle receive positive injury boost ahead of Chelsea contest

Two first-team regulars are set to return for this weekend’s game.

Newcastle United endured a sticky Christmas period and Steve Bruce knows a Premier League win is badly needed.

The Magpies beat Rochdale 4-1 in the FA Cup on Tuesday night and will look to take some confidence into this weekend’s game against Chelsea.

Bruce’s team haven’t won a league game since December 21st and have slipped to 13th in the league.

Newcastle have been boosted this week, however, with some positive news on the fitness front.

Both Fabian Schar and Allan Saint-Maximin have returned to first-team training and might be involved this weekend.

Swiss defender Schar missed the Wolves game but is set for a return to action this weekend.

The defender picked up a niggle and his return will certainly bolster Bruce’s defensive unit.

Saint-Maximin’s return is perhaps the better piece of news, however.

The 22-year-old arrived from Nice in the summer and was just starting to hit top form before injury struck.

His pace makes him a massive part of how Newcastle like to break quickly and Chelsea will need to watch him this week.

Bruce won’t want his team to become embroiled in a relegation battle and wins must return.

There isn’t a team in the league with an injury crisis as big as Newcastle’s and fortunately for Bruce the transfer window is open.

Having Schar and Saint-Maximin back will be a big bonus against a Chelsea side who have played some good stuff this season.

The Magpies need more though and Bruce will hope to sign a couple of players this month, giving him the best possible chance to compete for a top-half finish this season.
