Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune is back in light training for the Magpies.

The Frenchman appears to be nearing a return to action for the club, after rupturing his left anterior cruciate knee ligament against Crystal Palace last season.

That was his second serious injury since transferring from Eibar in 2017, after suffering the same thing on his other knee.

Lejeune has battled back with impressive haste from both injuries, and the fact that he is back in training is a major boost for struggling Newcastle.

He won’t be involved against Spurs this weekend as he needs to return to full training with the rest of the first-team,, but the signs are definitely promising.

TBR’s view

Lejeune is arguably Newcastle’s best defender when everyone is fit and on form, with Fabian Schar also a great player.

The 28-year-old – who earns £38,000-a-week (Spotrac) – has really impressed for the Toon Army when fit, and was solid as part of Rafa Benitez’s back three.

Newcastle have looked shaky at the back so far this term, and his integration back into the starting XI could really help Steve Bruce weather the early storm.
