Newcastle now want to sign £29m player Unai Emery thinks is going to be a star - journalist

Newcastle United want to sign promising forward Nicolas Jackson from Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke says that the Magpies have joined Everton in the chase for the Senegalese 21-year-old ahead of the January window.

Frank Lampard’s men were linked with the Villarreal man in the summer, but ultimately went in another direction with their recruitment.

That means the race is still on to sign the man who can be signed for £28.9 million by any team who triggers his release clause.

Unai Emery almost got the Newcastle job before Eddie Howe, and has said about the Magpies target earlier this year: “Nicolas Jackson is doing a very good job with the B team.

“He is a player with an interesting style of play. We will see how we can help him and what he can bring to us. He can play in different attacking positions.”

Now that he is free of injuries it is up to him to earn his place in the first team and show the extent of his talent. He has a lot of room for improvement and could well be one of the next stars of Senegal. His progress is to be followed.”

Newcastle want Nicolas Jackson

This season, he has played ten games across all competitions for Villarreal’s senior side, netting one La Liga goal and laying on an assist.

He will hope that there is plenty more to come as he looks to realise his potential and follow in the footsteps of countrymen such as Sadio Mane.

Newcastle have looked to young promising talent who can go on the journey with them since the takeover and it remains to be seen if Jackson is part of that by the end of the January transfer window.
