Newcastle now want £13m star who Trippier once labelled ‘one of the best in the world’

Newcastle United fans may not have been best pleased to see reports at the weekend claiming that the Magpies are interested in signing Hugo Lloris from Tottenham.

Of course, Newcastle are set to be without Nick Pope for a number of months after he sustained a serious shoulder injury in their win over Manchester United.

Newcastle have been linked with Aaron Ramsdale and David De Gea. But the Daily Mirror has now reported that Eddie Howe’s side are also considering a move for Hugo Lloris.

Kieran Trippier is a big fan of Newcastle target Hugo Lloris

Targeting Lloris would make sense for a club desperate for a goalkeeper. The Frenchman has not featured for Tottenham this season. And it appears that both Spurs and the 36-year-old are waiting for a move away to be secured.

So perhaps he could end up on Tyneside.

Newcastle fans may be aware that Lloris has not played in the Premier League since the Magpies thrashed Spurs 6-1 at St James’ Park last season. So it may be a concern that he is on their radar now.

However, one Newcastle player who may be delighted to see the £13 million man join the club is Kieran Trippier.

Trippier played alongside Lloris 86 times while at Tottenham, according to Transfermarkt. And in 2018, he suggested that there are few better than him.

“Hugo is, for me, one of the best in the world,” he told talkSPORT.

“You see him year after year the amount he saves us and the amount of points he saves us.

“Today was no different, I thought he was outstanding and obviously so were the whole team.

“But [he made] crucial saves.”

A decent option as cover for Martin Dúbravka

Of course, the concern is that Trippier’s comments came a number of years ago now. Lloris’ form had been in decline for a little while before he lost his place in the summer.

But as a short-term option, he may well prove to be a very decent signing as cover and competition for Martin Dúbravka.

Plus getting Lloris on the cheap may help Newcastle address some of the other areas of the squad which need strengthening in January. It appears to be essential that Howe welcomes several new faces through the door next month.
