Newcastle United could now hold the cards ahead of Tottenham when it comes to landing Burnley star, Dwight McNeil.
McNeil, who is valued by the Clarets at around £35m, could well move away from the club this summer with both Newcastle and Spurs having registered their interest.
The youngster has burst onto the scene under Sean Dyche. Despite scoring just twice this season, McNeil has also laid on five assists and been a key cog for Burnley.
But with Newcastle now close to a takeover, the Magpies will surely fancy their chances of landing the winger.
Making a statement with young English talent
There’s no question that Newcastle will look to go big when it comes bringing in new players. Under their new Saudi backed regime, the money will no doubt be splashed in the transfer market.
However, that doesn’t mean the club need to target big European and world-renowned names. Indeed, the likes of Antoine Griezmann have already been mentioned.
Players like McNeil are highly sought after. The Burnley man is young, English, and already has Premier League experience in the tank. That sort of thing will be crucial if Newcastle are to build their club.
There’s little use in just chucking money at a squad of individuals. There needs to be a plan in place. McNeil, though, would surely slot into that plan.
Beating Tottenham would send a message
Newcastle’s new owners will be keen to send a message to the rest of the league when they complete their takeover.
Part of that will be beating rival clubs to players. Newcastle, if they have European football ambitions, will class Spurs firmly in that bracket of Premier League rivals.
If they can put up the money to land McNeil ahead of Jose Mourinho’s men, then it’s one message sent loud and clear.
It’s exciting times for the Toon Army. Landing McNeil ahead of other clubs would be the perfect way to announce their intentions for the next season.
