Newcastle have enquired about the availability of Nice star Wylan Cyprien but Tottenham Hotspur are also keen.
The Daily Mail reports that Steve Bruce is keen to land the midfield maestro who is valued at £20 million by the Ligue 1 club.
Newcastle currently have 13 players on the sidelines through injury and the boss wants Mike Ashley to sanction some new arrivals.
Signing Cyprien is a must for Newcastle and they simply must beat Tottenham to the signature of a player bang in form.

The 24-year-old has been flying for the French outfit this season. He has netted seven goals and registered five assists from his 20 appearances.
A former France under-21 international the midfielder has typically played in a role marshalling the back four.
He can also operate further forward, however, and has also captained Nice on occasions this season.
Newcastle have been struggling of late with injuries and reinforcements are necessary. The Magpies haven’t won in four league games and currently sit 13th in the league.
January could turn out to be vital for Bruce. His team are just five points clear of the relegation zone and they must start winning again soon.
Tottenham do need a midfielder but they already have lots of quality within their ranks.
The signing of Gedson Fernandes might be good news for Newcastle. It would seem unlikely that Spurs will add two players in the same month and that might open the door for Bruce.
Perfect
Cyprien is exactly what Newcastle need.
He is strong, quick and perhaps most importantly, is capable of scoring goals from the middle of the park.

Newcastle have been soft at times this season and the battling qualities of Cyprien would go a long way towards changing that.
According to Who Scored, the maestro averages a pass success ratio of 87.5% in the league this season and also has nearly three shots a game too.
His versatility and capabilities at both ends of the pitch would make him perfect for Newcastle.
If they want him, they must go and get him ahead of Tottenham during January.
