Newcastle Transfer News: Ashworth eyeing Brighton again as Solly March shines

Newcastle United are monitoring the situation of Brighton winger Solly March, with Dan Ashworth an admirer of the Seagulls ace.

March was in fine form over the weekend as he scored twice to help Brighton down Liverpool. The versatile midfielder now has four for the season as he enjoys life under Roberto De Zerbi.

However, his form hasn’t gone unnoticed either. And according to 90Min, Newcastle are keeping an eye on March ahead of making a potential move. The Magpies are looking for another attacking midfielder in the January window, and March ticks boxes.

Brighton are trying to get March to sign a new deal to ward off such interest. 90Min claims that a new 18-month contract extension is being prepared, with his current deal set to expire in 2024.

March, 28, has made well in excess of 200 appearances for Brighton. After initially doing well while Graham Potter was in charge, March seems to have gone to a new level since De Zerbi came in.

Brighton, of course, won’t want to sell. But with Newcastle’s financial power and Ashworth’s links to Brighton, this isn’t a deal that should be written off completely.

TBR’s View: March to Newcastle would be a solid signing

There’s been a theme among the signings for Newcastle since Eddie Howe was there. They’ve spent a decent chunk of money but in the main, they’ve not gone for the absolutely spectacular signings.

March very much fits that status quo. He is a top Premier League player who goes about his business relatively unnoticed. But for Brighton, he is an absolutely key player.

Newcastle are building along nicely and while Brighton suit March, the temptation of the Magpies could be there as well. For now, it’s probably one that isn’t going to get going given how well Brighton are doing. But Newcastle have a big pull now, and Champions League football might help that further.
