Injured Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle is showing no signs of recovery, according to Steve Bruce. As reported by The Chronicle, Steve Bruce has confirmed that Gayle is no closer to returning to action.
Newcastle take on Liverpool this weekend and Gayle will not play a part. He has not featured this season after spending last year on loan at West Bromwich Albion. He netted 24 goals for the Baggies but has not been fit enough to feature this season.
The Magpies signed Joelinton in the summer, as well as free agent Andy Carroll. But Carroll and Gayle are both ruled out, leaving Joelinton alone in the striker department. He is still adapting to life in England but has shown early promise.
Giving an injury update on his squad, Bruce said (via The Chronicle): “Dwight’s a big disappointment for me because I have now been here for seven, eight weeks but this injury has not got any better – which is a big concern to all of us.”
Gayle’s injury is a blow for Bruce, who is planning to use the diminutive striker this season. While Rafa Benitez lost interest in Gayle after Newcastle’s promotion, Bruce wants to give him a vote of confidence.
The 28-year-old is a renowned poacher and he could work well alongside a more physical striker (Joelinton or Carroll). But there doesn’t appear to be a timeframe on his return from injury, suggesting this could be an ongoing problem.
