Newcastle make contact with AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli

Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli in recent days.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season with the Serie A leaders, but he and his representatives have held talks with Rossoneri officials about signing an extension.

The Italian international has been an unused substitute in the last two Serie A matches and will be hoping to reclaim his spot in the starting line-up as Milan go toe-to-toe with Napoli and Inter, in a three-way battle for the Scudetto.

But despite being a Milan player for seven years and being Stefano Pioli’s captain, it looks Romagnoli could be set for a new challenge this summer.

Calciomercato are now reporting that he has ‘very little chance of staying’.

The Italian outlet claim that the Magpies have made an approach for Milan’s number 13, but so have fellow Serie A side Lazio.

However, after coming through the Roma academy, it would be a surprise to see Romagnoli join his former club’s fierce rivals in the eternal city.

Romagnoli has played 246 times for Milan and has 12 caps to his name for the Italian national side, but he hasn’t made an appearance for the Azzurri since November 2019.

Romagnoli’s short-term focus is likely to be fixed on guiding Milan to their first Serie A title since 2011.

Signing off by winning the league title could be the perfect way for the left-footed centre-back to sign off.

At the age of 27, the Italian is entering his prime years and would bring him with bags of experience playing for one of the biggest clubs in European football.

One area that Newcastle will have to tread with caution is knowing that Romagnoli’s agent is Mino Raiola. The super agent has some of the biggest names in the world on his client list.

But Raiola will want a lucrative deal which benefits both him and Romagnoli, and with it being well-documented that the Toon Army are the richest club in the world following PIFs takeover, Raiola may look to exploit that with some hefty demands.

However, if Alessio Romagnoli is attracted to Tyneside for the footballing project that PIF and Eddie Howe are undertaking then he could prove to be one of the coups of the summer.
