Newcastle United sent winger Jacob Murphy out on loan in January to West Brom and he’s making a decent impact for them in the Championship.
The 23-year-old wide man has now scored two goals in five appearances and is enjoying regular first-team football again.
He struggled to make an impact in the first half of the season for Rafael Benitez’s team and is yet to dazzle at St James’ Park.
Murphy may be falling into the trap of another Newcastle loanee Dwight Gayle, who is also enjoying a temporary spell with West Brom this season.
Gayle, 28, is very much a centre-forward that has shown in his career he can be extremely effective in the Championship.
He’s netted 16 goals already for West Brom this campaign, but the step up to the top flight has always been difficult for him.
Murphy could well end up heading down a similar path of being dangerous in the second-tier but finding it too difficult at the elite level.
Newcastle need first-team players that can make a difference against the best and unfortunately the pair may fall just short.
Murphy perhaps deserves another crack in the Premier League to prove his qualities and his loan is restoring some confidence, but it may just be a step too far and a permanent exit may be for the best further down the line.
