Freddie Woodman faces a big challenge this Sunday as he aims to show Newcastle United’s hierarchy what he is about.

Woodman has a great chance to showcase his talent and prove he is the right man for the future. It hasn’t been the easiest week for Woodman, who is on loan at Swansea City, but his character will be put to the test this weekend.

Derby day

On Sunday, Swansea host Cardiff City in the Wales derby on TV. This will be the biggest game of Woodman’s career as he prepares to see just what a hostile derby is like.

Cardiff will throw everything at their Championship rivals and the travelling fans will undoubtedly give Woodman some stick. If he comes through this test with flying colours, Woodman will prove that he can cope with any future clashes with Sunderland.

Time to bounce back

Woodman and Swansea are both in desperate need of a win. The Swans were top of the league before a disappointing defeat to bottom club Stoke City. This was followed by a frustrating draw away at struggling Barnsley.

And it became three disappointing results in a row on Tuesday night. At home to Brentford, Woodman shipped three goals in the 3-0 loss. Woodman will be hoping for a clean sheet and three points in the derby.

Long-term ambitions

Woodman will need to produce a strong performance for the Swans because he needs to show his long-term Newcastle credentials. On Thursday, Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka signed a new six-year contract.

This means that Woodman faces a real challenge to show he is worthy of starting for Newcastle when he returns next season. The 22-year-old must prove why he can take Dubravka’s spot between the sticks.
