Newcastle loanee Freddie Woodman hoping to follow Sean Longstaff into the first-team

Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman wants to follow Sean Longstaff and become a first-team regular at St James’ Park, The Chronicle reports.

Woodman left Newcastle in the summer to join Swansea City on loan. With his route to the first-team blocked by Martin Dubravka, he has gone to get some experience under his belt in the Championship.

The 22-year-old has been impressive for the Swans, who are pushing for promotion in the Championship. He is hoping that this will convince Steve Bruce to give him a chance next season.

But he knows that it will be a difficult task with Martin Dubravka between the sticks. He recently signed a new long-term contract so him and Woodman will scrap it out for years to come.

“It’s always my aim”, Woodman told The Chronicle: “It is absolutely brilliant for Sean to be in there now.  I was with him on loan at Kilmarnock and there was great banter between us with everything that went on.

“I am realistic, Martin Dubravka was number 1, I loved working with him every day. He pushed me to be the best.”

TBR’s view

It will be fascinating to follow the Newcastle goalkeeper situation beyond this season. Dubravka seems settled between the posts but surely Woodman is the long-term plan.

Newcastle have developed the England U21 stopper since he was a schoolboy and they have high hopes for him. If he plays well all season for Swansea, Newcastle have a real dilemma on their hands next season.
