Newcastle United’s transfer priority will be to bring in a new striker this summer. With Salomon Rondon’s loan spell over and Ayoze Perez’s future in doubt, Newcastle will be scouring the market for new strikers.
Over the last few weeks, a few names have been mentioned. Among those are two Bundesliga strikers: Joelinton and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Hoffenheim striker Joelinton is on Newcastle’s radar this summer (The Chronicle). The Brazilian striker scored 11 goals and provided nine assists last season.
Joelinton has previously played in Brazil and Austria and could now be set for an English challenge. The 22-year-old is young and will be eager to improve if he moves to Newcastle.
Alternatively, Mateta is an option. The France U21 striker plays for Mainz and L’Equipe reports that Newcastle’s first bid has been rejected.
The 22-year-old is another young and hungry player who has proven himself in the Bundesliga. Mateta bagged 14 goals and three assists last season.
But surely Newcastle will only be looking at these two players if Rondon does not return. The Venezuela international was central to Rafa Benitez’s game plan last season.
Rondon scored 12 times for the Magpies and established himself as a fan favourite at St James’ Park. The 29-year-old would surely jump at the chance to return after West Brom failed to win promotion.
Joelinton and Mateta are both young and promising. But both players have similar styles of play to Rondon; they hold the ball up well, win aerial duels and provide a physical presence up top.
Newcastle cannot afford to have two strikers of this profile. Rondon has to be Newcastle’s priority with Joelinton and Mateta lined up as a contingency plan.
